Renewed Call for Tiruchendur-Coimbatore Train Service Extension

Residents and MPs urge Indian Railways to extend the Tiruchendur train service to Coimbatore and Mettupalayam, after initial plans post-COVID faced setbacks, leaving a critical gap in regional transport connectivity.

Coimbatore: In Jan 2015, Southern railway had accepted Madurai Division’s proposal to extend Tiruchendur – Madurai – Palani train service until Pollachi. As soon as the gauge conversion project in the Pollachi - Podanur stretch was completed the plan was to extend the same train to Coimbatore and further to Mettupalayam. But unfortunately it didn't happen.

Post covid when this daily train service was restored from Tiruchendur, the people of Coimbatore requested the same train to be extended to Coimbatore and further to Mettupalayam.

Members of Parliament from Tirunelveli, Dindigul, Pollachi, Nilgiris and MLA Coimbatore South had given their letters to the Railways to start Tiruchendur daily Train service from Coimbatore. But it was extended to Palakkad and the RTI data shows that a majority of the people deboard in Pollachi and almost an empty train goes to Palakkad.

Letters from 180 associations, Many Panchayat resolutions and online petitions from Coimbatore seeking this service was sent to the Chairman Railway Board of Indian Railways for which there is no action taken till today.

We request the Members of Parliament once again to meet the Chairman of Railways board and insist to restore this train facility immediately which will help hundreds of passengers travel safely to the Southern districts of Tamil Nadu from Coimbatore region.
