Seven-Year-Old Overcomes Rare Thyroid Cancer at GKNM Hospital, Coimbatore

Sathish*, a 7-year-old from Ramanthapuram, successfully underwent treatment for rare thyroid cancer at Coimbatore's GKNM Hospital. Financial support was provided by CUMI's CSR grant.

Coimbatore: In a notable medical case, GKNM Hospital in Coimbatore successfully treated a seven-year-old boy, Sathish*, from Ramanathapuram, who was diagnosed with a rare form of thyroid cancer. Sathish, whose father works at a petrol bunk, initially presented with neck swelling and pain. After ineffective treatment at a government hospital and subsequent suspicion of cancer, he was referred to GKNM Hospital.

Here, Pediatric Oncologist Dr. Ajeitha Loganathan and Surgical Oncologist Dr. Mohanraj confirmed the diagnosis through a biopsy. Thyroid cancer is notably rare in children, representing only 1% of childhood cancers. The treatment required surgery, which posed a financial challenge for Sathish's family.

Thanks to a CSR grant from Carborundum Universal Limited (CUMI), Sathish's surgery costs were covered. Post-surgery, he has been stable and continues with follow-up care. A future radioactive iodine scan is planned to evaluate the need for additional therapy.

This case underlines the importance of corporate support in healthcare, enabling access to necessary treatments for underprivileged sections of society.
