Decline in Fish Sales at Coimbatore Fish Market

Fish sales at Coimbatore's Ukkadam, Lorry Pettai and Perur Main Road markets have slowed down significantly, with prices dropping. This decline is attributed to the Sabarimala season, as many devotees observe fasts and avoid fish.

Coimbatore: In Coimbatore, the fish markets at Ukkadam Lorry Pettai and the Perur Main Road have experienced a notable slowdown in sales. These markets, which usually see around 15 tons of fish brought in for sale, are facing a slump. The primary reason for this downturn is the ongoing Sabarimala season.

During this period, a significant number of devotees wear the Ayyappa Mala and observe strict fasts, which traditionally include abstaining from non-vegetarian food, particularly fish.

This religious observance has led to a decreased demand for fish in the market. Consequently, the prices of fish have also seen a considerable reduction today. The fish markets in Coimbatore, known for their variety and volume, are thus facing an unexpected challenge in terms of sales and revenue, directly impacting the livelihoods of local fish vendors and suppliers.
