Major blow: Reduction of Domestic Flights from Coimbatore starts today

Coimbatore faces a significant reduction in domestic flights to Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru, impacting connectivity and development, with local associations seeking to address the issue.

Coimbatore: Coimbatore's connectivity has taken a hit with the reduction of domestic flight services. Last year, 24 A320 type aircraft operated daily flights to various cities across India, including two international departures to Singapore and Sharjah. Approximately 9000 passengers utilized the Coimbatore airport daily.

Currently, IndiGo is withdrawing six daily flights from the Coimbatore International Airport. The services being retracted include three flights to Chennai, two to Hyderabad, and one to Bangalore, starting October 2023.

Air India introduced two services from Coimbatore to Mumbai in 2023 (May & December), and IndiGo added another evening service to Mumbai during the same period.

According to sources, the reduction by IndiGo is due to technical issues in the engines of its aircraft fleet. Approximately 30 aircraft have already been grounded due to engine-related problems, and an additional 30-40 aircraft are expected to be grounded from January to March 2024, following directives from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

These cutbacks are causing significant inconvenience to passengers traveling to these three cities from Coimbatore and are also hindering the development of Coimbatore airport.

In response, local associations in the region are reaching out to various carriers to initiate or increase flight services from Coimbatore. There is hope that this issue will gain attention and be addressed in the coming days.
