Young Elephant Dies Following Leopard Attack in Coimbatore's Madhukkarai Forest

A two-week-old elephant calf died on January 3rd in Madhukkarai, Coimbatore, after failing to recover from weakness and injuries suspected to be from a leopard attack.

Coimbatore: A tragic incident occurred in the Madhukkarai forest range of Coimbatore where a young elephant calf, part of a herd camping in the Ettimadai Attamalai sector, succumbed to its injuries.

Forest officials had noticed the calf in a weak state and alerted a veterinarian. Despite interventions including administering glucose and lactogen, the two-week-old calf, which appeared to have been born underdeveloped, did not survive.

The calf passed away around 9:30 AM today. Preliminary examination revealed claw and bite marks, suggesting a leopard attack as the cause of death. Following the post-mortem examination, forest officials buried the calf in the vicinity. This incident has raised concerns about the safety of wildlife in the area.
