1,226 Buses to Halt Services in Coimbatore from Midnight Today

The bus services in Coimbatore face a temporary suspension as 1,226 buses will cease operations from tonight, following unresolved demands of the workers.

Coimbatore:

Starting midnight today, 1,226 buses will not operate in the Coimbatore district. The decision comes as direct and contractual workers, numbering around 14,000, are pressing for immediate implementation of pension schemes for those who joined in 2003, settlement of over 100 due dearness allowance (DA) installments ordered by the court, and resolution of the 15th wage agreement issues which were due to be finalized in September 2023 but have seen no progress into 2024.

Despite thousands of vacant positions, no new workers have been recruited, and the demands for immediate employment for the heirs of the deceased employees have not been met. The old buses have been criticized as a mere show of public service, needing urgent replacement.

In Coimbatore district, 343 buses require immediate replacement due to poor maintenance. The absence of administrative staff in the depots has led to financial losses, with compensations due to the workers pending. This strike poses a significant inconvenience to the general public and commuters.
