Coimbatore's Steep Decline in National Cleanliness Rankings Due to Poor Waste Management

Coimbatore's cleanliness rank has drastically fallen to 182nd place from 42nd last year, as per the Swachh Survekshan 2023 report, indicating serious waste management challenges in the city.

Coimbatore: In a concerning revelation, Coimbatore has tumbled down the cleanliness charts, securing the 182nd spot in the Swachh Survekshan 2023 rankings, a significant fall from the 42nd position it held in 2022.

The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs released these rankings on Thursday, which saw Coimbatore plummeting over 100 places among 446 cities evaluated.

Local social activists and environmentalists attribute this decline to inadequate knowledge and planning in waste management by the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC). The National Green Tribunal has also voiced its disappointment regarding the city's handling of solid waste management. CCMC Chief M. Sivaguru Prabakaran admitted the city's shortcomings in waste processing and collection and has proposed a series of measures to rectify the situation.

These measures include revamping the existing waste management facilities, introducing biomining projects, and setting up biogas plants. Prabakaran assured that these initiatives aim to enhance waste processing capabilities and are expected to help Coimbatore climb the cleanliness rankings by the next survey.
