Farmers in Dharapuram Demand Full Compensation for Nallathangal Dam Land, Continue 151-Day Protest

Farmers in Dharapuram have been protesting for 151 days, demanding full compensation for the land acquired for Nallathangal Dam, recently drawing attention with a 'Black Pongal' protest.

Tirupur: Farmers in the Ponnavadi village near Dharapuram, Tirupur district, have been engaged in a persistent 151-day protest, demanding full compensation for the land provided for the construction of the Nallathangal Reservoir Canal.

The protest was recently marked by a 'Black Pongal' event to draw the Tamil Nadu government's attention.

The land, approximately 720 acres, was acquired from around 120 people for the construction of the Nallathangal Dam. The compensation offered was deemed insufficient by the farmers, leading them to file a petition in court seeking additional amounts. Although the court directed the Public Works Department officials to ensure full compensation, the farmers allege that it has been over 20 years and they have yet to receive the full amount.

The protest has reached a critical juncture, with the farmers stating their intention to boycott the upcoming 2024 Parliamentary elections if their demands are not met. The Tamil Nadu Farmers' Protection Association President Eesan Murugasamy, speaking on the matter, emphasized the farmers' determination to continue their fight for fair compensation.

The protest in the Koneeripatti division of Ponnavadi village has become a focal point for the local agricultural community, symbolizing their struggle for justice and fair treatment.
