Coimbatore's 'Food Street' Project Expected to Complete by May

Coimbatore's ambitious 'Food Street' project near V.O.C Park, aimed at offering hygienic and healthy food options, is expected to be completed by May, despite initial delays.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore administration's 'Food Street' project, which commenced on October 7, 2023, near V.O.C Park, is projected to be completed by May. The project, costing Rs. 1 crore, is intended to provide a space for vendors to sell hygienic and healthy food.

Under this initiative, the street will feature amenities like street lights, a solid waste collection center, walkways, sanitation facilities, shades, and clean drinking water supply.

Initially, 20 shops, each spanning 330 square feet, are to be established. These shops will be auctioned off to eligible vendors, followed by the construction of additional shops in the second phase.

The primary objective of the project is to ensure adherence to hygiene standards in food handling. Once the shops are operational, regular monitoring will be conducted to ensure compliance with food safety regulations by the Food Safety Department and the Municipal Corporation's Food Safety Division.

Although the project was initially set to complete by December 2023, it faced delays due to the festival season and staff shortages. However, intensive work began in February, and the authorities are taking steps to complete the project by May.
