Tamil Nadu Agricultural University Celebrates Patti Pongal with Grandeur

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Coimbatore held a grand Pattie Pongal celebration, honoring cattle and agricultural workers.

Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) in Coimbatore celebrated Pattie Pongal, an annual event that pays homage to cattle as part of the traditional Tamil harvest festival. This year's celebration was marked with 72 pots for Pongal, signifying respect and gratitude towards the cattle.

The event included a procession of cows, followed by offering Pongal to the Sun God and then feeding it to the cattle. The workers from the Cotton, Paddy, and Horticulture departments of the university along with their families, participated in various sports and games. Competitions like tug-of-war and Silambattam (a traditional martial art) were highlights.

Prizes were distributed to the winners by Vice-Chancellor Dr. Geethalakshmi. The event also featured a traditional ceremony where cows stepped on a tray containing nine types of grains, symbolizing prosperity and abundance. It's believed that the grain on which the cow steps will thrive in the coming year.

Vice-Chancellor Dr. Geethalakshmi emphasized that Pattie Pongal is not just for farmers but a universal celebration that includes all beings related to agriculture. She highlighted the ritual of farmers offering the harvested grains to the Sun God, celebrating the bounty of nature. The celebration at TNAU brought immense joy to the farm workers, continuing a long-standing tradition.
