Pongal Celebrations at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Coimbatore

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Coimbatore celebrates Pongal with traditional fervor, offering harvested grains to the Sun God and conducting various cultural events.

Coimbatore:

The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Coimbatore observed the Pongal festival with grandeur and traditional customs. As part of the celebrations, the university, led by Vice-Chancellor Geethalakshmi, performed rituals by offering freshly harvested grains to the Sun God. The entire university campus was decorated, and special attention was given to adorning the cattle which play a significant role in agricultural practices.

The festival included traditional dances like Kummiyattam and Oyilattam. The staff from various departments like Cotton, Rice, and Horticulture, along with their families, enthusiastically participated in the celebrations. The tug-of-war competition was a highlight, engaging the agricultural workers and their families.

After the Pongal was made, a traditional 'Patti Mithikum' (cattle stepping) event was held. It's believed that the prosperity of the year depends on what the cattle step on among the offerings of turmeric, kumkum, vibhuti, sandalwood, milk, and mixed grains. This year, the cattle stepped on the grains and kumkum, indicating a year of abundance.
