Grand Pongal Celebrations at Manakkadavu Vaanavarayar Agriculture College

A three-day Pongal festival at Manakkadavu Vaanavarayar Agriculture College near Pollachi showcased traditional festivities, culinary contests, and a variety of cultural performances.


Pollachi: For the past three days, the Manakkadavu Vaanavarayar Agriculture College near Pollachi has been a hub of vibrant festivities, celebrating the Tamil harvest festival of Pongal.

The event kicked off on January 11, 2024, with traditional village cooking and a Kabaddi match.



The second day was filled with competitions like bull embracing, murukku biting, grinding with an ammi (grinding stone), ulakkai (pestle) hitting, sugarcane biting, flower garland making, rangoli designing, and clay sculpting.

Dr. P. Balasubramaniam, Director of Natural Resource Management Directorate, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, graced the event as the chief guest. Dr. So. Sethupathi, Associate Professor, Bharathidasan Government College for Women, Puducherry, also participated as a special speaker.



Students performed historical dramas and traditional dances, captivating the audience. The festivities continued with various traditional performances by invited folk artists, including Valli Kummiyattam and Kamputha dance.



On the final day, January 13, 2024, activities such as Pongal cooking, coconut breaking, rope pulling, pot breaking, and pole climbing engaged around 700 students and faculty members. Under the guidance of Dr. Ravikumar, Advisor to the Student Council, and led by student council president Mr. Akhilesh and other students, the festival was meticulously organized.

The college's Patron Karpagavalli Rajkumar, Director Dr. Kempu Chetty, and Principal Dr. Prabhakar presided over the event, making it a memorable experience for all.
