DMDK promises Vaiko Deputy CM berth

Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) Youth Wing Secretary and Vijayakanth's brother-in-law L.K. Sudhish has said that once the DMDK-PWF combine is voted to power, Vaiko would be made the deputy.

As a show of gratitude to its poll ally, People's Welfare Front (PWF), and for announcing Vijayakanth as the Chief Ministerial candidate, the DMDK has promised to make PWF convener and MDMK leader Vaiko as deputy CM if the alliance came to power.

Though it was yet to announce its list of candidates for the May 16 elections, the DMDK, however, said that other party leaders in PWF would be given plum posts. The PWF comprised political parties such as MDMK, VCK, CPI(M) and CPI.

"We will make Vidhuthalai Chiruthaikal Katchi (VCK) Chief Thol Thirumavalavan the Education Minister, Communist Party of India - (Marxist) State General Secretary G. Ramakrishnan will be made Law Minister, and CPI State Secretary Mutharasan will be the Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister", Sudhish said.

Reacting to Sudhish's statement, Vaiko said that it was the view of the DMDK youth wing leader. "Only after PWF front comes to power will we decide about the portfolios," Vaiko said. He, however, maintained that Vijayakanth was the Chief Ministerial candidate.

It may be recalled that though Vaiko was active with DMK during late 80's, he was never given the post of a Minister when the then party Chief Karunanidhi came to power. However, he was elected to both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

In 1993, Vaiko started MDMK due to differences with Karunanidhi and amid speculations that son M. K. Stalin would succeed him.

Likewise, other leaders such as VCK Chief Thirumavalavan, CPI-M leader Ramakrishnan and CPI State secretary Mutharasan allied with several political parties that came to power, they were not able to get a ministerial berth.
