Coimbatore: In an act of swift intervention, Forest Department personnel saved an elephant calf that had accidentally fallen into the Contour canal under the Parambikulam Aliyar Project near Sarkarpathy, Pollachi. The incident occurred this evening when the calf, attempting to drink water, slipped and fell into the canal.

The calf's mother also entered the canal in an attempt to rescue her offspring, struggling for an extended period without success and raising alarm with loud noises. Upon receiving information about the situation, a team of Forest Department staff, headed by Pollachi Forest Officer Pugazhendi, promptly arrived at the scene.

Witnessing both the mother and the calf in the canal, the staff waited for the right moment when the mother moved slightly away before descending into the canal to rescue the calf. They successfully brought the calf to the safety of the embankment.

Following the rescue, the calf and its mother were seen reuniting and moving away together, marking a happy ending to what could have been a tragic event.

The timely rescue operation by the Forest Department personnel has earned them praise from higher officials, highlighting their commitment to wildlife conservation and the well-being of the animals within their jurisdiction.
