Tamil Nadu Agricultural University Secures Patent for Innovative Farm Equipment

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has received a national patent for a new farm equipment, a Fertilizer broadcaster cum weeder, enhancing both fertilizer application and weeding efficiency in paddy fields.

Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has achieved a significant milestone by obtaining a national design patent for their newly developed Fertilizer broadcaster attachment to weeder.

This patent was awarded by the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks, under the Government of India.

The patented device is a dual-function tool that integrates the process of fertilizing and weeding in paddy cultivation. It features a seed hopper with a controlled release mechanism, a fertilizer spreading disc, and an efficient power transmission system. The broadcaster ensures even distribution of fertilizer over a three-meter swath using a spinning disc driven by a chain and sprocket mechanism connected to a power weeder.

Dr. V. Geethalakshmi, Vice Chancellor of TNAU, expressed her congratulations to the team responsible for this innovation during a formal certificate presentation on April 24, held in the Vice Chancellor's committee room. The event was attended by the Deans of the School of Post Graduate Studies (SPGS) and the Agricultural Engineering College & Research Institute (AEC&RI), both situated in Coimbatore.

This innovation is poised to make significant contributions to small farm mechanization, particularly enhancing efficiency in cultivating paddy fields.
