Protests Erupt at Coimbatore Hospital After Alleged Medical Negligence Leads to Death

A 54-year-old woman from Annur died allegedly due to wrong treatment at Maruthi Hospital in Thudiyalur, Coimbatore, leading to over 100 relatives protesting and demanding action.

Coimbatore: A sudden death following a surgical procedure at Maruthi Hospital in Thudiyalur has sparked outrage among the family and relatives of the deceased, a 54-year-old woman identified as Sakunthala from Semmanichettipalayam, near Annur. The incident occurred shortly after her surgery on the morning of today around 10 AM, leading to protests from her family members who accused the hospital of medical negligence.

The deceased had been undergoing treatment for sinus issues for the past five months under Dr. Palamurugan at Maruthi Hospital. She was admitted this morning for a nasal surgery suggested due to worsening sinus problems. However, complications arose post-surgery around 12:30 PM, resulting in her death.

Her sons, Ganeshamoorthy and Chandrasekaran, along with other relatives, were shocked and demanded answers from the medical staff. They claimed that the death was due to improper treatment and a lack of necessary facilities and equipment for surgery at the hospital. The family protested at the hospital, calling for immediate action against the staff and better hospital facilities.

The situation led to a heightened response from the local police at Thudiyalur, who arrived at the scene to pacify the crowd. Following the incident, on Chandrasekaran’s complaint, the police registered a case and moved Sakunthala's body to Coimbatore Government Hospital for an autopsy.

The hospital, while defending its service record, claimed that they had informed the family of the risks involved in surgery due to her pre-existing health conditions. The family has insisted on a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to Sakunthala's death.
