Former Minister SP Velumani Criticizes Police Inaction, Visits Assaulted Jewelers in Coimbatore

Former Minister SP Velumani expressed concerns over rising thefts and burglaries in Coimbatore, criticizing the police for their inaction and visited the victims at Selvapuram, urging quick recovery of stolen jewelry.

Coimbatore: Amid rising concerns about increasing incidents of theft and burglary in Coimbatore, former Minister and AIADMK leader SP Velumani condemned the local police's inefficiency in handling law and order.

SP Velumani expressed his frustrations during a visit to a jewelry workshop in Coimbatore where the owner, Rajendran, and his employee, Santhakumar, were assaulted and robbed of 33 sovereigns of gold on September 22 by a gang who attacked them with iron rods and a sickle while they were transporting jewelry on a two-wheeler.

The former minister personally visited the victims to offer his condolences and pressed for swift action to recover the stolen goods while accusing the police of being restrained in their duties.

Following the attack, the police have arrested four individuals in connection with the robbery, but the stolen jewelry has yet to be recovered.

Highlighting a pattern of such violent thefts, SP Velumani stressed the need for more stringent security measures for those involved in the jewelry business within the region and called for the empowerment of the police to function independently to reinstate order in the city. He warned that failure to address these crimes promptly might compel the AIADMK to initiate protests.

Additionally, in response to the scorching heat affecting the area, SP Velumani under Edappadi Palaniswami's directives, mentioned that various neighborhoods in Coimbatore have been operating water buttermilk stalls for the past two days to alleviate the discomfort caused by the heatwave, with plans to continue this relief work continuously. This proactive effort is part of broader initiatives undertaken during the hot weather to serve public needs efficiently.
