Inspection by CPI(M) and TN Farmers' Association on Controversial Dam Site Near Udumalai

CPI(M) leaders and Tamil Nadu Farmers' Association heads inspected the Silanthai River dam site near Udumalai, expressing concerns over water scarcity in Tirupur due to Kerala's new dam.

Tirupur: In a significant development, leaders from the CPI(M) and the Tamil Nadu Farmers' Association conducted an on-site inspection of the proposed dam across the Silanthai River near Udumalai, which lies at the border of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The visit comes amidst rising tensions and widespread opposition from various Tamil Nadu political parties against the construction of the dam by the Kerala government.

This proposed dam, located near the critical Amravathi Reservoir water catchment area, if constructed, is predicted to severely affect the irrigation and drinking water facilities in the districts of Karur and Tirupur. The Tamil Nadu political leadership has been vehemently opposing this project, fearing that it would lead to significant water shortages.

The CPI(M)'s regional leaders from Tirupur, along with district leaders of the Tamil Nadu Farmers' Association from Dharapuram and Madathukulam, gathered substantial support from local farmers for their inspection and possible actions to contest the dam's construction. The inspection followed directives from the state leadership to intensely scrutinize and mobilize opposition against Kerala's dam project at Vattavada Panchayat, Devikulam Taluk, Idukki District.

The situation remains tense as both states’ parties continue to rally local and national support, aiming to halt the project that could drastically alter the water distribution to Tamil Nadu's agricultural sectors.
