Contract Workers Stage Sit-in Protest at Coimbatore Government Hospital for Pending Payments

Over 300 contract workers staged a sudden sit-in at Coimbatore Government Hospital demanding overdue payments and safety equipment, following a High Court order.

Coimbatore: Coimbatore Government Hospital, a key healthcare provider not only for the city but also for adjacent districts like Tirupur, Nilgiris, Erode, and Salem, witnessed a major protest. Typically bustling with activity, the hospital sees thousands of patients daily, serviced by numerous staff members, including both permanent and contract workers responsible for various duties such as cleaning and security.

Today, over 300 contract workers gathered in front of the hospital dean's office to protest. They demanded payment of pending wages and provision of safety equipment, as mandated by a recent High Court ruling. Reports have highlighted the removal of some workers without prior notice, igniting questions about the enforcement of labor rights within the institution.

The protest led to a tense environment at the facility, which primarily impacts services and disturbs the routine care provided to patients. After negotiations, hospital administration promised to resolve the issues by the 7th of next month, which led to the dispersion of the protest.
