Public Surround Police Station at Night Over Broken Water Pipeline in Sulur

Residents of Ayyampalayam near Sulur, Coimbatore, surrounded the local police station after a water pipeline was vandalized. The incident escalated to a roadside protest, affecting traffic.

Coimbatore: Tensions ran high in Ayyampalayam, a locality under the Sulur Sultanpet union in Coimbatore district, when a group of unidentified individuals reportedly vandalized a communal water pipeline. Over a thousand families in the village depend on this source for their daily water supply, which is managed by the village council.

The destruction of the pipeline resulted in an immediate water shortage in the area, prompting the residents to lodge a complaint at the local police station. Frustrated with the lack of quick action and demanding the arrest of the perpetrators, the locals staged a midnight siege at the Pettai police station. Subsequently, a protest ensued on the Pollachi Tirupur road, severely disrupting traffic.

Following the protest, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Karumathampatti, Thangaraman, intervened. He spoke with the agitated locals and assured them of speedy action against those responsible. A resolution was reached only after these assurances, leading to the dispersion of the crowd.
