Woman Falls into Open Manhole, Contractor Fined ₹50,000 by Coimbatore Corporation

A woman was injured after falling into an uncovered manhole on 100 Feet Road, Gandhipuram. Following the incident, the Coimbatore Corporation imposed a ₹50,000 fine on the contractor.


Coimbatore: In a recent incident that highlighted the peril of negligence in urban infrastructure, a woman was seriously injured after falling into an uncovered manhole on 100 Feet Road in Gandhipuram. The alarming incident prompted quick response from the municipal authorities.

Following the viral video of the incident, which spurred public outcry, the Coimbatore Corporation acted swiftly. Corporation Commissioner Sivaguru Prabakaran ordered the imposition of a ₹50,000 fine on the responsible contractor for failing to cover the manhole. Further, notices were issued to the assistant engineer in Gandhipuram seeking explanations for the oversight.

Subsequently, the Coimbatore Corporation undertook the urgent task of covering all open manholes in the area with cement lids to prevent any such incidents in the future. The action taken by the authorities has been broadly appreciated by the public, ensuring enhanced safety on busy city roads.

Simplicity reported about these open manholes yesterday evening and soon after a woman slipped and fell into it. Following public outcry, Coimbatore Corporation had taken action to cover the manholes in 100 feet road, Gandhipuram.
