Semmozhi Poonga Park Taking Shape in the Heart of Coimbatore

Coimbatore's Central Jail area is being transformed into a vibrant Semmozhi Poonga Park. The project, initiated during DMK's previous tenure, accelerates with current government's efforts.

Coimbatore: The historical Central Jail in Coimbatore, located on Nanjappa Road in Gandhipuram and built in 1877 over 165 acres, is set to undergo a significant transformation into Semmozhi Poonga Park. The jail premises, which had separate sections for male and female inmates housing over 2,000 and 50 respectively, are under the scrutiny for transformation under the supervision of the DIG of Coimbatore jails.

Since the announcement by the DMK government in 2010, about 45 acres of the jail area were handed over to Coimbatore Municipal Corporation to develop the park 12 years ago. This initiative resumed with vigor as the current government proceeded with plans to relocate the Central Jail to near Karamadai, facilitating the park's development.

Mayor M.K. Stalin initiated the park's construction in December last year, making it a focal point for environmental conservation, research, and recreation. The municipal officials state that the park is designed to serve as a sanctuary for students, environmentalists, and the general public, featuring educational and recreational facilities.

The park will include distinctive zones like Kurinji Forest, Semmozhi Forest, and Tree Forest, among 23 types of gardens planned, catering to various aspects of nature and horticulture. Facilities such as auditoriums, open-air theaters, playgrounds, restrooms, and a multi-level parking system are also proposed, setting a completion target of 18 months from start.

Commissioner Ma. Shivakuru Prabhakaran recently noted that 17% of the construction work has been completed, with ongoing efforts to expedite the project aimed at establishing a world-class park in Coimbatore.
