Coimbatore and Salem Prone to Moderate Earthquake Impact, Anna University Study Reveals

A recent study by Anna University's Center for Climate Change and Disaster Management reveals that 80% of areas in Coimbatore and Salem are vulnerable to moderate earthquakes.

Coimbatore: A significant portion of Coimbatore and Salem, approximately 80%, is susceptible to moderate earthquakes, according to a recent study conducted by Anna University's Center for Climate Change and Disaster Management. This research, part of the "Seismic Hazard Assessment and Microzonation of Salem and Coimbatore Cities", identifies high-risk zones particularly in Coimbatore's southern and central regions.

Areas surrounding Noyyal River, Ukkadam Lake, and Sanganur Canal in South Coimbatore have been marked as particularly vulnerable. The study emphasizes the need for retrofitting existing buildings to minimize damage in case of an earthquake and urges new constructions to be designed to withstand seismic activities.

By addressing these vulnerable structures, the impact of potential earthquakes can be significantly reduced, safeguarding the communities living in these hazardous zones.
