CEIR: New Technology Introduced in Coimbatore to Combat Cell Phone Theft

Coimbatore Cyber Crime Office announces the introduction of CEIR (Central Equipment Identity Register) technology to track and recover stolen mobile phones, enhancing the efficiency of law enforcement in tackling cell phone theft.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Cyber Crime Office has announced the introduction of a new technology to combat the rising incidence of online fraud and cell phone theft. In a press release issued on July 5, the office highlighted the implementation of the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR), a cutting-edge technology introduced by the central government.

Previously, when a cell phone was stolen, the police would track the device using its IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number. However, despite numerous complaints, only a limited number of stolen phones were successfully recovered and returned to their owners.

With the introduction of CEIR, the process of tracking and recovering stolen mobile phones has been significantly enhanced. This new technology has now been deployed in the Coimbatore district, enabling more efficient identification of stolen devices.

The Coimbatore City and District Cyber Crime Police have integrated with the CEIR portal to leverage this new technology. Citizens whose mobile phones have been lost or stolen are advised to immediately visit the CEIR website and report the incident to block the device.

To prevent misuse of this system by fraudulent individuals, complainants are required to provide supporting documentation when filing a report online. This includes the CSR (Community Service Register) number provided by the police, along with copies of identification documents such as Aadhaar, driving license, or PAN card.

Once a complaint is filed with the necessary documentation, the reported mobile phone will be blocked within 24 hours. This new system is expected to significantly improve the recovery rate of stolen mobile phones and deter theft in the Coimbatore region.
