Traders Protest in Coimbatore Demanding DMK Government to Eradicate Illicit Liquor

Traders in Coimbatore staged a protest on July 9 in front of the South Taluk Office, urging the DMK government to take immediate action against illicit liquor and reopen toddy shops to prevent deaths from spurious alcohol.

Coimbatore: Members of the Tamil Nadu Traders Association Council staged a protest on Sunday, July 9, in front of the South Taluk Office in Coimbatore, demanding the DMK government to take immediate action to prevent deaths caused by illicit liquor and to reopen toddy shops.

The demonstration was led by K.C. Raja, the State General Secretary of the association, with Sudarsan, the Coimbatore Zonal President, presiding over the event. A large number of traders and supporters participated in the protest, raising slogans against the Tamil Nadu government's alleged inaction on the issue of illicit liquor.

Protesters criticized the government's approach, claiming that many lives have been lost in Tamil Nadu due to the consumption of spurious alcohol. They also alleged that the government's policy of providing Rs. 10 lakh as compensation to families of victims inadvertently encourages the consumption of illicit liquor.

The association put forth several demands, including the establishment of rehabilitation centers for individuals addicted to alcohol. They emphasized the need for comprehensive programs to reform and support those struggling with alcohol dependency. The traders urged the government to take decisive action to completely eradicate the menace of illicit liquor in the state.

The demonstration highlighted the growing concern among the trading community about the social and economic impact of illicit liquor trade in Tamil Nadu. The protesters called for stricter enforcement of laws and more proactive measures from the DMK government to address this critical issue.
