Tamil Nadu Electricity Board Announces Tariff Hike for Domestic Consumers

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission has announced an increase in electricity tariffs for domestic consumers using over 400 units. The hike affects various consumption slabs, with rates increasing by 20 to 55 paise per unit.

Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission has announced a significant increase in electricity tariffs for domestic consumers across the state. The new rates will primarily affect households consuming more than 400 units of electricity.

According to the announcement, consumers using between 401 and 500 units will now be charged 6.45 paise per unit, up from the previous rate. For those consuming 501 to 600 units, the tariff has been raised from 8.15 paise to 8.55 paise per unit.

The hike is more substantial for higher consumption brackets. Households using between 801 and 1000 units will see an increase from Rs 10.20 to Rs 10.70 per unit. For consumers exceeding 1000 units, the rate has been raised from Rs 11.25 to Rs 11.80 per unit.

Notably, the commission has also increased the tariff for the 0-400 unit slab, which was previously charged at 4.60 paise per unit. This rate has now been revised to 4.80 paise per unit, marking a 20 paise increase.

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board stated that these revisions are necessary to meet the increasing costs of power generation and distribution. The board emphasized that despite the hike, Tamil Nadu's electricity rates remain among the most competitive in the country.

Consumer groups have expressed concern over the timing of the increase, citing the ongoing economic challenges faced by many households. However, the electricity board maintains that the new tariff structure is designed to encourage energy conservation while ensuring the financial sustainability of the power sector in the state.
