Heavy Rainfall in Valparai Causes Flooding, Sholayar Dam Water Level Rises

Valparai experiences heavy rainfall for two days, causing flooding in rivers and rising water levels in Sholayar Dam. Public warned against entering rivers due to strong currents.

Coimbatore: Heavy rainfall in Valparai over the past two days has led to flooding in rivers and a significant rise in the water level of Sholayar Dam. The continuous downpour has disrupted normal life for residents in the area.

The estate regions surrounding Valparai, including Karumalai, Akkamalai, Pachaimalai, Vellamalai, Chinna Kallar, Nirar Dam, Cinchona, Periya Kallar, Sholayar Dam, Sekkal Mudi, Pudukadu, and Mazhukkaparai, have been experiencing intense rainfall.

As a result of the heavy rains, the Nadumalai and Koolangal rivers in Valparai have swollen, causing flooding. This has led to an increased inflow of water into the Sholayar Dam, raising its water level significantly.

The Valparai Municipality Police have issued a warning to both locals and tourists, advising them not to enter or bathe in the rivers due to the strong currents caused by the flooding.

Rainfall measurements in the Valparai region and the current status of Sholayar Dam are as follows:

Valparai recorded 69mm of rainfall, Nirar Dam 74mm, Chinna Kallar 105mm, and Sholayar Dam 62mm. The highest rainfall was recorded in Chinna Kallar at 10cm.

The inflow to Sholayar Dam has reached 7,753 cubic feet, with the current water storage at 4 TMC. The dam's full height is 165 feet, and the current water level stands at 140 feet. Notably, the water level has risen by 12 feet in a single day.

With the continued rainfall, it is expected that the dam will reach its full capacity within the next few days.
