The Anti-Corruption Bureau conducted a surprise overnight raid at the Sub-Registrar Office in Periyanaickenpalayam, Coimbatore, seizing Rs 2.8 lakh in unaccounted cash. The 12-hour operation caused a stir in the area.

Coimbatore: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) conducted a surprise overnight raid at the Sub-Registrar Office in Periyanaickenpalayam, Coimbatore, seizing Rs 2.8 lakh in unaccounted cash. The operation, which lasted for about 12 hours, caused a stir in the area.

The Sub-Registrar Office, located near the Periyanaickenpalayam Government General Hospital, handles land registrations for over 30 villages in the surrounding region. Two sub-registrars, Aruna and Ramesh, work at this office.

The ACB received complaints about various malpractices at the office, including fraudulent activities in document registration, fake alterations in land documents, excessive bribery from those coming for registration, and increased broker activity. Acting on an anonymous tip that Sub-Registrar Aruna had accepted a bribe of Rs 2.8 lakh, the ACB team, led by ADSP Divya, along with Inspectors Sheela, Ezhilarasi, and five other police officers, rushed to the registration office.

As the team arrived, they found that Aruna had already left in her car. The officers pursued and intercepted her vehicle about a kilometer away. Upon searching the car, they discovered Rs 2.8 lakh in cash. Aruna was immediately taken back to the office for questioning.

The ACB team sealed the office doors, preventing staff from leaving, and thoroughly examined the documents. The main gates were also closed to restrict outsiders from entering. The raid, which began around 8 PM, continued through the night and concluded at about 7 AM the next morning.

After seizing the unaccounted cash of Rs 2.8 lakh, the ACB officials instructed Sub-Registrar Aruna to appear at the Anti-Corruption Bureau office for further investigation. The extensive 12-hour operation has raised concerns about the functioning of the Sub-Registrar Office in Periyanaickenpalayam.
