High Court Dismisses Petitions by College Principals Seeking Extension of Service Beyond UGC Prescribed Tenure

The Madras High Court dismissed petitions from two college principals in Coimbatore who sought to continue their service beyond the tenure stipulated by UGC regulations, ruling that the UGC guidelines and state government orders are applicable even to self-financing colleges.

Coimbatore: The Madras High Court has dismissed two writ petitions filed by Dr. K.M. Chinnadorai and Dr. K. Ramamurthi, both serving as principals at self-financing colleges in Coimbatore. The petitioners had sought extensions to continue serving as principals beyond the tenure limits set by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

The court ruled that the UGC regulations, which stipulate a maximum tenure of 10 years for college principals, are binding even on self-financing institutions. The court further emphasized that any deviation from these regulations would compromise the standard of higher education. Both petitions were dismissed, with the court noting that the petitioners had already exhausted their permissible tenure as per the UGC guidelines.
