300 Farmers Arrested During Protest Against Corrupt Sub-Registrar Near Udumalpet

Near Udumalpet, 300 farmers were arrested while protesting against the Kaniyur sub-registrar accused of corruption and malpractices. The official allegedly extorted bribes with DMK support, leading to public outrage.

Coimbatore: In a dramatic turn of events near Udumalpet in Tiruppur district, over 300 farmers were arrested today while attempting to lay siege to the Kaniyur sub-registrar office. The protest was aimed at condemning the alleged corrupt practices of sub-registrar Damodaran, who has been accused of extorting bribes and engaging in malpractices with the support of DMK members.

According to the protesting farmers, Damodaran has been using his political connections and a network of brokers to intimidate farmers and the general public who visit the office for property registrations. He allegedly collected crores of rupees in bribes and engaged in fraudulent practices, including impersonation in document registrations.

Despite multiple protests by farmers and the public demanding departmental action against Damodaran, authorities including the District Registrar, Zonal Registrar, and the Tamil Nadu government have reportedly failed to take any action. Frustrated by the lack of response, farmers gathered in large numbers today, attempting to surround the sub-registrar's office and demanding immediate departmental action against Damodaran.

The police intervened and forcibly arrested all the protesters. Speaking to the media after their arrest, farmer representatives stated, "No departmental action has been taken against Damodaran yet. We will continue our series of protests until justice is served." The incident has highlighted the growing tension between the agricultural community and local officials, with farmers vowing to intensify their agitation if their demands are not met.
