TNAU Observes Parthenium Awareness Week with Educational Campaigns in Coimbatore

TNAU conducts awareness campaigns from August 16-22 on Parthenium weed management, educating farmers, students, and workers about its ill effects and control measures in Coimbatore.

Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) is observing Parthenium Awareness Week from August 16 to 22, as part of the All India Coordinated Research Program on Weed Management sponsored by ICAR, Directorate of Weed Research, Jabalpur. The program, operated by the Department of Agronomy at TNAU, Coimbatore, aims to educate various stakeholders about the harmful effects of Parthenium and its management.

The awareness campaigns target farmers, school students, farm laborers, and sanitary workers. The inaugural event focused on sensitizing farm laborers working at TNAU's Eastern block and Central Farm about Parthenium weed management.

Dr. P. Parasuraman, Professor and Head of the Department of Agronomy, presided over the campaign and delivered a keynote address on Parthenium and its management. The campaigns emphasize the ill effects of Parthenium weed and various control measures, including cultural, chemical, and biological methods.

Additionally, the program demonstrates composting technology for Parthenium, offering an eco-friendly solution for weed management. Dr. S. Radhamani, Professor of Agronomy and Principal Investigator (AICRP-WM), along with Dr. C. Bharathi, Associate Professor (SS&AC), have been conducting these awareness campaigns at various locations since August 16.

The initiative by TNAU highlights the importance of managing Parthenium, an invasive weed that poses significant threats to agriculture and human health. By educating different groups of people, the university aims to create a broader understanding of the issue and promote effective weed control strategies in the region.
