A 13-year-old girl from Krishnagiri underwent successful bone cancer surgery at GKNM Hospital, Coimbatore. The Hans Foundation, a public charitable trust, provided financial support for the complex procedure, which cost approximately Rs 4,00,000.

Coimbatore: In a remarkable medical achievement, a team of doctors at G Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial (GKNM) Hospital in Coimbatore successfully performed a complex bone cancer surgery on a 13-year-old girl from Krishnagiri. The life-saving treatment was made possible with the support of The Hans Foundation, a public charitable trust.

Sangeeta (name changed), the eldest of two children in her family, had been experiencing severe pain and swelling in her right leg for three months. After initial treatments proved ineffective, she was referred to GKNM Hospital, where she was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma of the Right Tibia, a form of bone cancer.

The treatment plan involved a multidisciplinary approach, including three rounds of chemotherapy followed by a complex six-hour surgery. Dr. Arul Raj, Chief of Department of OncoSurgery, Dr. Mansoor Ali, Orthopedic Surgeon, and Dr. Anand Narayan, Radiation Oncologist, performed the intricate procedure. The surgery utilized a hybrid treatment to avoid the use of an external prosthesis, significantly reducing the overall cost.

The affected bone was subjected to high doses of radiation therapy to eliminate cancer cells before being reattached to its original position. Sangeeta has since been discharged in good health, marking a successful outcome for this challenging case.

The Hans Foundation played a crucial role in Sangeeta's treatment by covering the entire cost of the surgery, approximately Rs 4,00,000. This financial support was vital for Sangeeta's family, as her father, a farmer with a monthly income of about Rs 6,000, would have struggled to afford the necessary treatment.

The Hans Foundation, a Public Charitable Trust, focuses on enhancing access to healthcare, education, livelihood, disability support, and disaster relief. Their health interventions aim to provide universal access to public healthcare services, particularly in remote areas, and address the needs of women and children. The Foundation is also committed to supporting cancer treatment for underprivileged individuals, including palliative care for advanced-stage patients.

The successful treatment of Sangeeta highlights the importance of collaborative efforts between medical institutions and charitable organizations in providing life-saving care to those in need. The team at GKNM Hospital expressed their gratitude to The Hans Foundation for their timely and generous support, which made this complex procedure possible and gave a young girl a chance at a healthy future.
