Coimbatore Corporation Female Employee Sentenced to One Year Imprisonment for Bribery

A former tax collector of Coimbatore Corporation has been sentenced to one year in prison and fined Rs 10,000 for demanding a bribe of Rs 7,000 in 2014 to change property tax ownership.

Coimbatore: A special court for prevention of corruption in Coimbatore has sentenced a former female employee of Coimbatore Corporation to one year imprisonment for accepting a bribe in 2014.

The case dates back to 2014 when Muthukumaravel, a resident of Gandhi Park area in Sullivan Street, Coimbatore, purchased a plot of land. When he approached the Coimbatore Corporation's West Zone office to change the property tax ownership, Vasanthakumari, who was then working as a tax collector in the 20th ward, allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 7,000 for the service.

Muthukumaravel reported the matter to the Anti-Corruption Police, who subsequently arrested Vasanthakumari. The case has been under trial at the Special Court for Prevention of Corruption Acts in Coimbatore.

On Wednesday (August 30), Judge S. Mohana Ramya, who presided over the case, pronounced the verdict. The judge sentenced Vasanthakumari to one year imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 for her misconduct.

This case serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to curb corruption within local government bodies and the consequences faced by those found guilty of such practices.
