103.5 kg of Spoiled Fish Seized from Ukkadam Fish Market in Coimbatore

Food Safety officials conducted surprise inspections at Ukkadam fish market in Coimbatore, seizing 103.5 kg of spoiled fish worth Rs. 50,150 from 9 shops. Strict action warned against violators.

Coimbatore: In a crackdown on the sale of spoiled fish, officials from the Food Safety Department and Fisheries Department conducted surprise inspections at the Ukkadam fish market in Coimbatore on September 3. The operation, carried out under the directives of District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati, led to the seizure of 103.5 kg of spoiled fish worth approximately Rs. 50,150.

Six teams comprising 12 officials from both departments inspected a total of 51 shops, including 35 wholesale fish market shops in the Ukkadam Lorry Pettai area and 16 retail shops in the Ukkadam retail fish market on Selvapuram Bypass Road.

During the inspections, officials discovered and confiscated about 65 kg of spoiled fish from five wholesale shops and 38.05 kg from four retail shops. The seized fish, totaling 103.5 kg, was subsequently destroyed. Notices will be issued to the nine shops, both retail and wholesale, found selling spoiled fish.

District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati warned that strict action would be taken under the Food Safety Act against those selling spoiled or old fish. He also announced that such surprise inspections would continue in all areas of the district to ensure food safety standards are maintained.

The public has been encouraged to report any such violations by contacting the Food Safety Department's WhatsApp number 9444042322. Additionally, consumers can download the 'tnfoodsafetyconsumer' app from the Google Play Store to file complaints directly.

This action underscores the administration's commitment to ensuring public health and food safety in Coimbatore, particularly in the fish markets where the risk of selling spoiled products is high.
