On V.O. Chidambaram's 153rd birth anniversary, DMK members paid tribute to his oil press and portrait at Coimbatore Central Prison, commemorating his legacy as 'Kappalottiya Tamizhan'.

Coimbatore: On the occasion of V.O. Chidambaram's 153rd birth anniversary on September 5, 2024, members of the DMK party paid their respects to the oil press and portrait of the freedom fighter at the Coimbatore Central Prison. V.O. Chidambaram, affectionately known as 'Kappalottiya Tamizhan' (The Tamil Helmsman) and 'Sekkizhutha Semmal' (The Oil Press Hero) by Tamils, was honored for his significant contributions to India's independence movement.

The delegation, led by Coimbatore Corporation West Zone Chairperson Deivayani Tamilmarai and 36th Ward DMK Secretary Viswanathan, garlanded the oil press and portrait of V.O. Chidambaram. The oil press holds particular significance as it earned him the title 'Sekkizhutha Semmal' during his imprisonment at Coimbatore jail.

Other DMK members present at the event included Kathiresan, James, Court Vengadu, and Siddha Balu. The group paid their respects to the freedom fighter's memory and acknowledged his sacrifices for the nation's independence.

V.O. Chidambaram's legacy continues to inspire generations of Tamils and Indians alike. His dedication to the freedom struggle and his efforts in establishing the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company to challenge British monopoly in maritime trade remain significant chapters in India's fight for independence.
