In Coimbatore's Big Bazaar Street, a shopkeeper was arrested for selling cigarettes and beedis near a school, violating the ban on tobacco sales near educational institutions.

Coimbatore: A shopkeeper was arrested on Wednesday for selling cigarettes and beedis near a private higher secondary school on Big Bazaar Street in Coimbatore, violating the ban on tobacco sales near educational institutions.

Acting on a tip-off about the illegal sale of tobacco products near the school, Ukkadam Sub-Inspector Ajay Sharma conducted a surprise inspection on September 4. During the raid, the police discovered 10 packets of beedis and 21 packets of cigarettes in the small shop.

The tobacco products were immediately seized by the authorities. The shop owner, identified as Mohamed Kabir (53) from P.K. Chetty Street, was arrested for violating the prohibition on selling tobacco products near schools and colleges. He was later released on bail.

This incident highlights the ongoing efforts by local law enforcement to curb the sale of tobacco products near educational institutions, which poses health risks to students and violates existing regulations.
