Surplus Water Released from Parambikulam Dam Through Three Sluice Gates

Parambikulam Dam reaches full capacity, prompting authorities to release excess water through three sluice gates. The dam's water level rose to 71.78 feet out of its 72-foot capacity on September 5.

Coimbatore: The Parambikulam Dam, located in the Kerala forest area near Pollachi Topslip in Coimbatore district, has reached its full capacity, leading to the release of surplus water through three sluice gates. The dam, which is the lifeline of the Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP) irrigation scheme, has a height of 72 feet and a total capacity of 17 TMC.

Last week, water was released as a trial run through newly renovated sluice gates due to increased inflow. On September 5, the dam reached its full capacity, with the water level rising to 71.78 feet out of the total 72 feet. The inflow to the dam was recorded at 4,600 cubic feet per second.

Considering the dam's safety, authorities released 3,600 cubic feet of water per second through three sluice gates. The excess water flows through the Poringal Kuthu Dam and Chalakudy Falls before joining the Arabian Sea. Additionally, 1,000 cubic feet of water is being diverted through a tunnel to the Contour Canal.

Due to the increased inflow, a team of engineers is monitoring the situation closely. The team includes PAP Project Monitoring Engineer Karthikeyan, Parambikulam Dam Executive Engineer Sivakumar, Assistant Executive Engineer Jayakumar, and Assistant Engineers Thiyagarajan and Sangeetha.

The release of surplus water ensures the dam's safety while also benefiting the downstream areas and irrigation systems. Authorities continue to monitor the water levels and inflow to manage the situation effectively.
