BJP Functionary Arrested in Nilgiris for Spreading False 'Love Jihad' Rumors

A BJP district functionary was arrested in Nilgiris on September 6, 2024, for spreading false rumors on social media about a woman's murder being a case of 'love jihad'. The police clarified the victim was Muslim by birth.

Coimbatore: The Nilgiris district police arrested a BJP district functionary on Friday, September 6, 2024, for spreading false rumors on social media platforms. The individual had falsely claimed that the murder of a woman in Udhagamandalam was a case of 'love jihad', a discredited right-wing conspiracy theory often used to target and harass members of the Muslim community.

The victim, identified as Ashika Parveen, was allegedly murdered by her husband and in-laws. The police had already arrested four individuals in connection with the incident. Following the murder, certain right-wing groups began circulating rumors that Parveen was a Hindu who had been forced to convert by her husband.

However, the police have categorically denied these claims, stating that Parveen was a Muslim by birth. The Cyber Crime Police in the Nilgiris took swift action to trace the social media accounts responsible for spreading these false rumors.

On Friday, the police arrested a resident of Aruppukottai in Virudhunagar district, identified as Vetrivel. He was subsequently brought to Udhagamandalam for further investigation. The arrest underscores the authorities' commitment to curbing the spread of misinformation and maintaining communal harmony in the region.

This incident highlights the growing concern over the misuse of social media platforms to spread false information and incite communal tensions. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of fact-checking and responsible sharing of information online.

The police have urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified information and to report any instances of hate speech or false propaganda they encounter on social media platforms.
