Tamil Nadu Government Declares Public Holiday on September 17 for Milad-un-Nabi

Tamil Nadu government announces public holiday on September 17 for Milad-un-Nabi celebration, rescheduled from September 16 due to moon sighting delay. Holiday applies to all government offices, schools, and ration shops.

Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu government has officially declared September 17 as a public holiday across the state to mark the celebration of Milad-un-Nabi, the birthday of Prophet Muhammad. This announcement comes after a change in the initial date of celebration.

Earlier, the government had designated September 16 as the date for Milad-un-Nabi celebrations in Tamil Nadu. However, due to the non-sighting of the Rabi-ul-Awwal moon on the evening of September 4 in Chennai and other districts, the date was revised. A few days ago, the Government Chief Qazi, Salahuddin Muhammad Ayub, announced that Milad-un-Nabi would be celebrated on September 17 instead of September 16.

In response to this announcement, the Tamil Nadu government has now officially declared September 17 as a public holiday. Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Irai Anbu released a statement saying, "Based on the Negotiable Instruments Act, September 17 is declared as a public holiday for Milad-un-Nabi instead of September 16."

The statement further clarified that this public holiday would be applicable to all government departments, public sector undertakings, corporations, boards, and other government institutions. Additionally, government and private offices, schools, and ration shops will remain closed on this day.

This change in holiday date ensures that the Muslim community in Tamil Nadu can observe Milad-un-Nabi on the correct day as per the Islamic lunar calendar, while also allowing government employees and students to participate in the celebrations.
