Tamil Nadu Is India's Drug Capital, Claims Pollachi Jayaraman

Pollachi MLA Jayaraman inaugurates road project, alleges rampant drug abuse in Tamil Nadu. He criticizes law enforcement's inaction on illegal liquor and drug trafficking, particularly in the Pollachi region.

Coimbatore: Pollachi MLA Jayaraman has made a startling claim that Tamil Nadu has become the "drug capital" of India, stating that the state is reeling under the influence of narcotics. The BJP legislator made these comments while inaugurating a new concrete road project in Vadakkipalayam area of Pollachi North Union.

Jayaraman initiated the road construction work, valued at Rs 7.50 lakh, funded from the MLA's constituency development fund. Speaking to reporters after the event, he expressed grave concern over the drug situation in the state, particularly in the Pollachi region.

The MLA cited recent incidents to support his claims. He mentioned that last month, two individuals were admitted to a private hospital in a critical condition after consuming illicit liquor in the Mavadappu area. Additionally, he pointed out that Kerala Police had seized over 3,000 liters of spirit during a raid in Semmanapathy near Anamalai.

Jayaraman alleged that illicit liquor and narcotics are freely available in many parts of Pollachi. He called for immediate and decisive action from the police department to curb these illegal activities. The MLA also raised concerns about drug trafficking to neighboring Sri Lanka, claiming that cannabis and other narcotics are being smuggled via boats from the region.

Questioning the role of law enforcement, Jayaraman said, "The public is asking whether the police are mere spectators or are colluding with the traffickers." He also commented on the corruption charges against former minister S.P. Velumani, stating that these allegations, coming after three years, were a response to Velumani's efforts to strengthen the AIADMK in the Kongu region. Jayaraman expressed confidence that Velumani would face these charges legally and emerge unscathed.

The event was attended by Pollachi North Union Secretary Saktivel, party executives, and a large number of local residents.
