Garlic Sells for Rs. 436 per Kg in Mettupalayam

The Nilgiris Cooperative Marketing Society's Mettupalayam branch auctioned garlic for Rs. 436 per kg on September 22. Farmers from various parts of the Nilgiris brought over 30 sacks of garlic for sale.

Coimbatore: The Nilgiris Cooperative Marketing Society's Mettupalayam branch, located on Nellithurai Road, has been witnessing high prices for garlic in recent auctions. On Sunday (September 22), garlic fetched a maximum price of Rs. 436 per kilogram, continuing a trend of prices exceeding Rs. 400 per kg over the past month.

Farmers from various parts of the Nilgiris, including Koodalur, Kethi, and Coonoor, brought their garlic produce for sale at the cooperative society. While potatoes are auctioned daily, garlic auctions are held exclusively on Sundays.

Speaking about the auction, officials from the Nilgiris Cooperative Marketing Society said, "The garlic brought by Nilgiris farmers was put up for auction. It reached a maximum price of Rs. 436 per kilogram. For the past month, garlic has been consistently auctioned for over Rs. 400 per kg." They added that more than 30 sacks of garlic, each weighing about 50 kilograms, were brought to the sale center on Sunday.

The Nilgiris Cooperative Marketing Society plays a crucial role in facilitating the sale of local produce, primarily potatoes and garlic, grown in the Nilgiris district. This system helps farmers get fair prices for their produce while providing a structured market platform.
