The Anti-Corruption Bureau conducted a surprise raid at the Coimbatore Collectorate, catching a treasury official red-handed for accepting a bribe of Rs. 2000 from a retired physical education teacher seeking gratuity payment.

Coimbatore: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) conducted a surprise raid at the Coimbatore District Collectorate on Wednesday, leading to the arrest of a treasury official for accepting a bribe. A team of seven officials, led by ACB ADSP Divya, carried out the operation following a complaint from a retired physical education teacher.

A. Raja, the Education Division Supervisor at the treasury office in the Coimbatore District Collectorate, was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs. 2000.

The complainant, Cyril Arokkiyam Alexander, a resident of Nanjundapuram area, had retired as a physical education teacher from Kikani Higher Secondary School on May 31.

When Alexander approached the treasury office's education division to receive his gratuity payment, Raja allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs. 2000. Alexander had previously informed the district Anti-Corruption Bureau about this demand.

Acting on the complaint, the ACB team, under the leadership of ADSP Divya, provided Alexander with chemically treated currency notes. As per the official's instructions, Alexander placed the money in Raja's desk drawer. The ACB team, which was lying in wait, immediately raided the office, seized the bribe money, and apprehended Raja.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau is currently conducting further investigations into the case. This incident highlights the ongoing efforts to curb corruption in government offices and ensure transparency in public services.
