Submit phone, express regret; repeat of offence might remove you off social media: Madurai High Court to BJP Functionary Selvakumar in Palani Panchamirtham Rumor Case

The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court granted anticipatory bail to BJP functionary Selvakumar, who spread rumors about Palani Panchamirtham. The court ordered him to submit his phone and express regret on social media.

Coimbatore: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has granted anticipatory bail to BJP functionary Selvakumar, who was accused of spreading rumors about Palani Panchamirtham on social media. The court, while granting the bail, laid down specific conditions for Selvakumar to follow.

Justice Bharatha Chakravarthy, who heard the anticipatory bail petition, ordered Selvakumar to submit his mobile phone to the police for investigation. The court also directed him to express regret for his actions on social media platforms.

As part of the bail conditions, the court ordered Selvakumar to delete the controversial tweet that sparked the rumor. The judge warned that if such behavior continues, the court might be compelled to order his removal from social media platforms altogether.

The case highlights the growing concern over the spread of misinformation on social media and the legal consequences that individuals may face for such actions. The court's decision to grant anticipatory bail with specific conditions reflects an attempt to balance legal proceedings with measures to prevent further spread of unverified information.

This incident serves as a reminder of the responsibility that comes with using social media platforms and the potential legal implications of spreading rumors or unverified information, especially concerning sensitive matters like religious practices or food items with cultural significance.
