Kumaraguru College of Liberal Arts and Science hosted a national conference on 'Recent Excavations in Tamil Nadu' on September 29, 2024, showcasing latest archaeological findings and their historical significance, drawing experts and enthusiasts from across the country.
Coimbatore: Kumaraguru College of Liberal Arts and Science (KCLAS), in collaboration with the N. Mahalingam Tamil Research Centre (NMTRC) and the Vanavarayar Foundation, organized a National Conference on "Recent Excavations in Tamil Nadu" on Saturday, September 29, 2024. The event brought together experts, professors, research scholars, and archaeology enthusiasts from across the country to discuss the latest archaeological findings and their historical significance.
Dr. V.P. Yathees Kumar, Assistant Archaeologist from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Tiruchirappalli Circle, delivered the keynote address on "Archaeological Excavations on the Banks of the Tamiraparani River". His presentation focused on the findings at Adichanallur and Sivakalai, two major archaeological sites, and their connections to the Pandya dynasty's old ports, Korkai and Alagankulam.
Dr. Yathees Kumar revealed that artifacts from Adichanallur are being prepared for exhibition at the Porunai Archaeological Museum in Tirunelveli, showcasing evidence of an ancient civilization dating back several millennia. He emphasized the use of advanced scientific methods to accurately determine the age of these artifacts, enabling a deeper understanding of Tamil Nadu's rich cultural heritage.
The conference saw active participation from scholars and faculty members of various universities, as well as passionate individuals from the field of archaeology. A highlight of the event was a guided visit to the Kongalnagaram excavation site in the Tirupur district, where participants witnessed ongoing research efforts. The site exhibited ancient artifacts, including pots and coins, as well as stone pools, giving attendees a glimpse into the everyday life of past civilizations. The field trip was organized under the guidance of Dr. Jagatheesan, Director of the N. Mahalingam Tamil Research Centre.
