Massive Cleanup Drive Begins at Sangamam-Thamarai Lake in Avinashi

Volunteers join forces to clean up the 140-acre Sangamam-Thamarai Lake in Avinashi, which has been neglected for 40 years. The initiative aims to remove plastic waste and liquor bottles, with plans for desilting and fencing.

Coimbatore: A significant cleanup operation has commenced at the Sangamam-Thamarai Lake in Avinashi, spearheaded by various organizations and the Avinashi Lake Protection Movement. The 140-acre lake, located in the heart of Avinashi, has become a dumping ground for plastic waste and liquor bottles over the years.

Volunteers have been working tirelessly for the past six weeks to restore the lake to its former glory. According to local residents, the lake has not been filled to capacity for nearly 40 years, highlighting the urgent need for intervention.

The cleanup drive aims to address multiple issues plaguing the water body. The lake has unfortunately become an open-air bar, resulting in a large number of discarded liquor bottles scattered across its premises. Volunteers have observed that many areas of the lake have become elevated due to years of neglect and accumulation of waste.

The Avinashi Lake Protection Movement has ambitious plans for the restoration of Sangamam-Thamarai Lake. In addition to the ongoing cleanup efforts, they intend to desilt the lake, strengthen its bunds, and erect fences around the perimeter. To facilitate these plans, the organization has sought permission from the Public Works Department.

"We are committed to restoring this vital water body and preserving it for future generations," said a spokesperson for the Avinashi Lake Protection Movement. "We urge more volunteers to join our cause and help in this massive cleanup drive."

The initiative has garnered support from various sections of society, with many recognizing the importance of rejuvenating urban water bodies. Those interested in participating in the cleanup efforts are encouraged to contact the Avinashi Lake Protection Movement for more information.
