Rs. 7,656 Crore Coimbatore-Karur Eastern Bypass Road Project Gets Green Light

The long-awaited Coimbatore-Karur Eastern Bypass Road project, spanning 182 km across three districts, has been approved with a budget of Rs. 7,656 crore. The project aims to boost industrial growth and ease traffic congestion.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore-Karur Eastern Bypass Road project, initially announced in 2016, has finally received approval with a budget of Rs. 7,656 crore. The 182 km green corridor will pass through Coimbatore, Tiruppur, and Karur districts, aiming to enhance connectivity and boost industrial growth in the region.

The project, which had been in limbo for the past six years, is now set to be executed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The feasibility study for the bypass road was completed in 2018, but the project remained stagnant due to lack of action from the central government.

The Coimbatore region, known for its thriving industries such as hosiery, foundry, pump manufacturing, motor production, wet grinders, and automobile companies, has been eagerly awaiting this infrastructure development. Industry representatives emphasize that improved road connectivity is crucial for the rapid growth of businesses in the area.

The Eastern Bypass Road is expected to significantly benefit the industrial sector by facilitating easier transportation of goods to other states and regions. It will also promote the development of suburban areas around Coimbatore, potentially leading to increased job opportunities and overall economic growth.

The project involves land acquisition for the bypass construction. Once completed, it is anticipated to dramatically improve industrial development and employment opportunities in Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts. Business leaders predict that Coimbatore will experience substantial growth, with suburban areas developing on par with the city center.

NHAI engineers describe the Eastern Bypass as a dream project for the Kongu region. Due to its extensive length, the construction work will be divided into multiple packages. The road will connect four districts, and a detailed project report has already been prepared with necessary modifications.

The bypass is designed as a freight corridor, which will eliminate obstacles for cargo vehicles. It will also facilitate easier travel between Coimbatore and Kerala, benefiting interstate transportation. Additionally, it will serve as a connecting route to Ooty.

With the Western Bypass Road in Coimbatore expected to be completed within a year, the addition of the Eastern Bypass will create a circular route around the city. This will allow vehicles to reach suburban areas, villages, and other districts without entering the city center, significantly reducing traffic congestion.

The preliminary work for the project is underway, and construction is expected to begin once the central government allocates funds and issues tenders. NHAI officials stated that the project could be completed within three years once work commences.

This Eastern Bypass Road project is part of 25 national-level projects that have received approval from the National Highways Authority.
