Skin Donation Awareness Event at Ganga Hospital Highlights Importance of Organ Donation

Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore organized a skin donation awareness event, showcasing their efforts in receiving 351 skin donations and utilizing them for 244 patients across 24 hospitals nationwide.


Coimbatore: Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore hosted a skin donation awareness and appreciation event to emphasize the importance of organ donation. The All India People's Rights and Legal Awareness Association arranged a screening of the short film "Thenmozhi" at the hospital to promote awareness about skin donation.

The short film, directed by Kumar Thangavel, was inaugurated by Kanagavalli Shanmuganathan, Chairman and Managing Director of Ganga Hospital, along with Dr. S. Raja Sabapathy, Head of the Department of Plastic Surgery at Ganga Hospital, and R.T.N. Sundaravadivelu, District Governor of Rotary District 3201. All participants stressed the significance of raising awareness about skin donation.

Dr. Raja Shanmuga Krishnan, a plastic surgery expert, spoke about the importance of skin donation for treating burn patients. He emphasized that skin and eye donations can be made within six hours of death. If a person dies, Ganga Hospital should be contacted within 6 hours. A team from the hospital will immediately visit the site to harvest the skin for donation. The process takes about 30 minutes, and there will be no disfigurement after the procedure.

Since its inception in 2015, Ganga Hospital's skin bank has received 351 skin donations. During the event, voluntary organizations that contributed to skin donation were appreciated. Dr. Raja Shanmuga Krishnan stated that skin from the bank has been used for 244 patients across 24 hospitals nationwide.

The event was attended by office bearers of the All India People's Rights and Legal Awareness Association, including R.K. Kumar, Dr. Subramaniam, Latha Arjunan, Rajesh Kumar, Ramesh Kumar, and Radhakrishnan.

The gathering emphasized the critical need for skin donation and its potential to save lives, particularly for burn victims. The event served as a platform to educate the public about the process of skin donation and its impact on patient care.
