Farmers Protest Against Substation and High-Tension Tower Projects Near Tirupur

Over 100 farmers and villagers staged a demonstration in front of the District Collector's office in Tirupur, demanding cancellation of a substation project and relocation of high-tension towers in Kavuthampalayam village.

Tirupur: Over 100 farmers and villagers from Kavuthampalayam village near Tirupur staged a demonstration in front of the District Collector's office on Thursday. The protesters demanded the cancellation of a proposed substation project and urged authorities to relocate the planned high-tension towers along the roadside.

Kavuthampalayam village, located near Uthukuli in Tirupur district, is home to more than 3,000 families in the Kumarikkalpalayam area. The entire region is predominantly agricultural, with farming being the primary occupation of the residents.

The Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation (TANTRANSCO) has proposed to construct a 765 kV high-tension power line from Virudhunagar to Kavuthampalayam in Tirupur district. The farmers are insisting that these towers be installed along the roadside instead of agricultural lands. Additionally, they are opposing the establishment of a substation in the Kavuthampalayam area.

The protest was organized by the Tamil Nadu Farmers Protection Association. The demonstrators accused the district administration of being complicit in the destruction of Tamil history and culture. They stated their firm opposition to both the substation and the high-tension towers, declaring their readiness to face imprisonment if necessary to protect their lands.

The protesters also highlighted the historical significance of the area, suggesting that archaeological excavations could potentially uncover important historical artifacts and information. They urged the authorities to consider the cultural and historical value of the land before proceeding with the projects.

The farmers' association demanded immediate intervention from the district administration to address their concerns and find an alternative solution that would not affect their agricultural lands and livelihoods.
