BJP worker attempts self-immolation over Kinathukadavu seat allocation to AIADMK

A BJP worker attempted self-immolation during protests in Coimbatore’s Eachanari after Kinathukadavu constituency was allotted to AIADMK, triggering unrest among party cadres.

Coimbatore:

Tension prevailed in Eachanari near Coimbatore after a BJP worker attempted self-immolation during a protest demanding allocation of the Kinathukadavu Assembly constituency to the party.

Members of the Bharatiya Janata Party staged a road blockade protesting the seat-sharing arrangement in which the Kinathukadavu constituency was allotted to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

During the protest, a party worker suddenly poured petrol on himself and attempted to set himself on fire, leading to a tense situation. Police personnel and fellow party members intervened and prevented the incident.

BJP cadres in Coimbatore’s south district have expressed dissatisfaction over the constituency allocation, stating that the seat was expected to be given to former district president Vasantharajan. They have been demanding reconsideration of the decision.

The protest reflects growing discontent among local party workers over seat-sharing arrangements in the alliance ahead of the elections.

In the 2021 Assembly elections, the BJP contested 20 seats and won four. For the upcoming elections, the party has been allotted 27 constituencies as part of the alliance, but has retained only a limited number of previously contested seats.

Leaders including Nainar Nagendran and Vanathi Srinivasan are expected to contest from different constituencies this time, reflecting changes in the party’s electoral strategy.

Police maintained security in the area following the incident, and the situation was brought under control.
