Two Sixth Grade Students Drown in Kannambalaiyam Pond While Fishing

Two 11-year-old sixth grade students from Kannambalaiyam drowned in a local pond while fishing on March 26. The boys went missing in the morning and their bodies were later recovered by fire service personnel from the pond.


Coimbatore: Two school students tragically drowned in a pond at Kannambalaiyam near Sulur in Coimbatore district while they had gone fishing on Wednesday morning.



The deceased have been identified as Sujith Kumar (11), son of Ramesh from TVK Nagar in Kannambalaiyam, and Pradosh (11), son of Yuvaraj from the same locality. Both boys were sixth grade students at Kadhirmil Higher Secondary School in Kamatchipuram area.




On March 26, Plus 2 public examinations were being conducted at their school, due to which classes for sixth grade students were scheduled to begin only in the afternoon. Taking advantage of the free morning hours, the two boys left their homes around 9 AM after breakfast, informing their parents that they were going fishing.




When the boys did not return home even after several hours, their worried parents began searching for them at various locations. Meanwhile, information was received that two bodies were floating in the Kannambalaiyam pond. When the parents rushed to the spot, they confirmed that the bodies were those of Sujith Kumar and Pradosh.




Fire service personnel who arrived at the scene upon receiving the information retrieved the bodies of both boys from the pond and sent them to the government hospital for post-mortem examination. Sulur police have registered a case and are conducting an investigation into the incident.


The drowning deaths of the two school students who had gone fishing has cast a pall of gloom over the Kannambalaiyam area. The tragic incident has shocked the local community and raised concerns about the safety of waterbodies in residential areas.
